Digital eye strain causes stinging and dryness during screen use

Digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, is a common condition characterized by sensations of sand in the eyes, stinging, and blurred vision after prolonged screen use. This phenomenon is driven by physiological changes in how the eyes function during concentrated visual tasks compared to distance viewing.

A primary cause is the reduction in blink frequency. While normal blinking occurs 15 to 20 times per minute to spread the tear film across the eye, intense concentration on screens can reduce this reflex by more than half. This leads to accelerated evaporation of the tear film, resulting in dryness, stinging, and burning sensations. Factors such as improper screen distance and angles can further exacerbate ocular muscle strain.
