Latin America digital payments see rapid growth and fintech expansion
Latin America is experiencing a significant shift toward digital financial services, characterized by record-breaking QR code payments and the expansion of fintech infrastructure. In Argentina, QR code transactions reached a new record of 117.2 million operations in August, with total mobilized funds hitting $2.9 trillion. This growth is supported by interoperable systems involving both banks and virtual wallets.
In Colombia, fintech Rebill has tripled its processed payment volume since January, focusing on digital services like streaming and SaaS. Additionally, the fintech Addi has partnered with dLocal to offer 'Buy Now, Pay Later' options for global platforms like Amazon and Netflix in the Colombian market.
Ecuador is also seeing rapid digital adoption, with Banco Pichincha reporting that 8 out of 10 customers now use digital channels, a significant increase from 17% in 2019. However, the region faces challenges, including high transaction costs for merchants in Argentina and the evolution of organized crime using usury and extortion in Ecuador.
In Mexico, the financial sector is focusing on enhancing security through biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, to combat rising fraud rates.
