Digital financial services in Indonesia show significant growth

Digital financial services in Indonesia are experiencing substantial growth. According to the Financial Information Service System (SLIK), buy now pay later (BNPL) or paylater financing by finance companies grew 54.65 percent year on year to Rp13.62 trillion as of July 2026.

Additionally, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) reported that outstanding online loan (pinjol) financing grew 22.07 percent year on year, reaching Rp106.94 trillion through August 2026. While both services offer quick access to funds, they differ in mechanism, purpose, and risk levels. Paylater services are generally considered more secure as they are typically integrated into established e-commerce platforms, whereas online loans carry higher risks due to the presence of illegal applications operating without OJK supervision.

Financial stability in the digital era requires disciplined management. Small, repetitive digital expenditures, such as food delivery apps and various digital subscriptions, can significantly impact long-term financial health if not monitored through regular expense tracking.
