Digital fraud alerts: Vishing scams and community security initiatives

Fraudsters are utilizing a new form of vishing (voice phishing) by impersonating the retailer Coolblue. Scammers use pre-recorded messages claiming a suspicious payment of €800 has been made, prompting victims to press a key to be connected to a fake bank employee. These criminals attempt to steal sensitive financial information, passwords, and bank codes by creating a sense of urgency and panic.

Fraudstop warns that they never initiate unexpected contact. Citizens are advised to hang up immediately, never share PINs or digital pass codes over the phone, and avoid downloading remote access software.

In response to rising digital threats, local authorities in Hoeksche Waard, including the police and municipality, are organizing a 'Cyberbingo' event. This initiative aims to increase digital resilience by teaching residents how to recognize signals of online fraud, phishing, and suspicious messages sent via SMS, WhatsApp, and email.
