Digital fraud targeting mobile payments rises in Norway and Denmark

Authorities and security experts in Norway and Denmark are warning users about evolving digital fraud methods targeting mobile payments and personal security credentials.

In Norway, security specialists at Frende Forsikring have identified a scam where criminals gain remote access to mobile devices. Scammers often pose as representatives from services like PayPal, claiming suspicious activity to build trust. They then persuade victims to install screen-sharing applications such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. Once access is granted, criminals can control the device and bypass traditional BankID security by using Apple Pay to drain accounts.

In Denmark, the Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) has issued a warning regarding fraudulent emails targeting MobilePay users. These phishing attempts claim that users must connect their MobilePay account to MitID to avoid transaction restrictions. Officials emphasize that MobilePay will never request MitID user IDs, codes, or one-time passwords via email, phone, or SMS. Users who have already interacted with these links are advised to contact the Cyber Hotline for Digital Security immediately.
