Digital fraud trends show different victim profiles in Chile and Mexico

Recent reports highlight varying demographics of digital fraud victims in Chile and Mexico. In Chile, a Kaspersky study reveals that 61% of adults over the age of 60 are unaware if their personal data has been leaked online. This lack of awareness makes seniors vulnerable to highly personalized social engineering attacks, where criminals use leaked information such as full names and addresses to impersonate banks or family members to commit financial fraud.

In contrast, data from Mexico’s National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) indicates that Millennials are the primary victims of digital fraud. According to the report, 69% of victims belong to this generation, and 68% possess a high level of education. Experts suggest this is due to increased time spent on digital platforms and a false sense of security. In Mexico, 68% of the 36,738 complaints received in the first quarter of the year were related to potential financial fraud, with a significant portion occurring in urban areas.
