Youth online gambling rises in Argentina and Mississippi

Research highlights the rising prevalence of online gambling among youth in Argentina and the United States. In Argentina, a Unicef report titled ‘Kids Online Argentina’ indicates that one in four adolescents has gambled at some point. Furthermore, 60% of adolescents report knowing someone who gambles online, and 47% are aware of specific betting platforms and applications. The ease of access provided by digital wallets and smartphones is noted as a factor that facilitates these activities.

In the United States, a study published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction involving 1,800 students from eight Mississippi public universities found that 24% had engaged in betting during the previous year. Approximately 7% of these students showed signs of gambling problems. The study also observed correlations between frequent betting and increased risks of depression, anxiety, and substance use among young adults.
