Digital gold presents investment opportunities and challenges

Digital gold offers a method to combine the historical value of physical gold with the convenience of electronic trading. This includes digital tokens representing specific quantities of gold in secure storage or platform-based accounts managed by third parties.

Several barriers to widespread adoption exist. Key challenges include establishing provider trust, ensuring clear redemption processes for physical metal, and integrating trading into existing payment platforms or banking apps. In regions like India, China, and Indonesia, where such integration is available, trading volume is reportedly seven times higher than in areas without these channels.

For digital gold to gain further utility, it may need to be used for payments, serve as collateral for loans, or allow for leasing to earn returns. Additionally, transaction costs must remain competitive compared to physical gold or gold exchange-traded funds.
