Digital habits: Cognitive benefits of active screen use versus concerns over excessive consumption
Research from the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Eastern Finland, published in the journal APediatric Exercise Science, suggests that screen time does not inherently harm children's brains. An eight-year study following the PANIC framework found that adolescents with higher cumulative screen time exhibited better reaction times, more accurate working memory, and higher general cognitive processing abilities.
However, researchers emphasize that the type of content is critical. Active cognitive engagement—such as strategic gaming, coding, reading, or language learning—stimulates the nervous system through problem-solving and decision-making. In contrast, passive consumption, such as aimless scrolling through social media, does not significantly stimulate neuroplasticity.
In a separate context regarding digital habits, a study by Yettel and Impetus Research indicates that 35% of Hungarians aged 18–69 feel they spend too much time in front of screens. Many respondents reported using digital devices for over nine hours on weekdays. A significant portion of those surveyed expressed a desire to reduce screen time to improve sleep quality, reduce mental fatigue, and enhance work-life balance or family time.
