Digital health tools expand access across Nepal and India
Digital technologies are reshaping healthcare access across South Asia through social media engagement and artificial intelligence. In Nepal, doctors are increasingly utilizing platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram to bypass geographical barriers and provide medical information to remote populations and the diaspora. This shift toward digital communication allows for accessible health education but introduces new challenges regarding professional ethics and the distinction between public education and commercial promotion.
In India, new technological developments are targeting healthcare gaps in rural and semi-urban areas. The Arogya Seva project, developed as part of the #VoiceForBharat challenge, utilizes an ultra-low latency voice AI to provide multilingual medical guidance. By integrating speech-to-text, large language models like Google Gemini, and human-like voice synthesis, the system aims to assist non-tech-savvy users through natural spoken interaction in English, Hindi, and regional languages.
