Digital literacy vs. digital presence in the age of AI
Digital presence does not equate to digital literacy, as frequent technology use does not guarantee the ability to assess the credibility of online content. True digital literacy involves critical thinking, such as verifying sources, checking context, and identifying missing information before reacting to or sharing content.
Generative artificial intelligence has introduced new challenges by enabling the rapid production and dissemination of highly convincing content. In an environment of fast-paced news, short videos, and algorithmic recommendations, the ability to pause and evaluate information has become a vital digital skill to prevent the spread of misinformation.
According to Eurostat’s ‘Digitalisation in Europe – 2026 edition’ publication, 93 percent of EU residents aged 16 to 74 used the internet at least once a week in 2025, yet high usage rates do not automatically translate to high levels of digital competence.
