Digital maturity linked to AI literacy in children
A study published in the Journal of Intelligence suggests that being a “digital native” does not automatically equip children with the skills needed to navigate artificial intelligence. Researchers from Beijing Normal University and Shenzhen University conducted research on 434 Chinese primary school students, with an average age of 10.68.
The findings indicate that “digital maturity”—which includes the ability to manage online impulses and emotions, recognize digital risks, and know when to seek help—is independently associated with AI literacy. After accounting for factors such as gender, school grade, and device usage, digital maturity explained an additional 7.5% of the variation in children's AI literacy, suggesting that self-regulation and judgment are distinct from general technological comfort.
