Digital media faces crisis of narrative uniformity and declining depth

Media professionals and cultural editors are raising concerns regarding the loss of genuine diversity and depth in the digital age. Despite an abundance of platforms, including podcasts, newsletters, and social media, there is a growing trend toward narrative uniformity driven by algorithms that reward engagement over original perspectives.

Santi Carrillo, director of the Spanish magazine Rockdelux, highlights how digital platforms like TikTok and Instagram have displaced traditional media, leading to a dilution of journalistic depth. He describes a phenomenon of “digital idiotization,” where the reliance on smartphones and social media has replaced rigorous analysis with ephemeral, unverified content.

This shift is compounded by a “paradox of abundance,” where the pressure to conform to algorithmic trends and the fear of social backlash or demonetization leads to self-censorship. While the faces of media presenters may become more diverse, critics argue that the underlying perspectives and permitted conclusions remain largely the same, resulting in a cosmetic rather than substantive diversity of thought.
