Digital navigation dependency and privacy risks rise

Recent data and studies highlight the growing reliance on digital navigation and the associated privacy risks. A survey conducted by Bitkom in Germany reveals that 84 percent of Germans use navigation apps, with half of the population feeling lost without them. The study also notes a decline in traditional orientation skills, as only 30 percent of Germans aged 16 and older feel confident using printed maps. This dependency is particularly pronounced among younger generations, whereas 41 percent of those over 65 still feel capable of using analog maps.

Parallel to this digital shift, concerns regarding data privacy persist. Navigation services like Google Maps and Apple Maps collect extensive location data that can reveal sensitive personal details, such as home addresses, workplaces, and even medical visits. Critics suggest that these services feed movement data into advertising ecosystems. As an alternative for privacy-conscious users, offline-capable applications like Organic Maps and CoMaps are recommended, as they function without internet connections, accounts, or telemetry.
