Digital nomads face ‘hidden admin tax’ from bureaucracy

New research from Holafly, titled the ‘Digital Nomad Friction Index 2026’, reveals that digital nomads face a significant ‘hidden admin tax’ due to complex international bureaucracy. While many countries have introduced digital nomad visas to attract remote workers, the practicalities of living abroad—such as navigating banking systems, tax registrations, residency requirements, and local paperwork—often create substantial hurdles.

The study highlights a direct link between administrative complexity and professional wellbeing. Among digital nomads reporting burnout, 89.1% stated they felt overwhelmed by tasks like managing visas and local paperwork. Additionally, 46.8% of respondents reported that travel disruptions have resulted in lost billable hours or decreased income.

Beyond paperwork, connectivity remains a critical factor for remote professionals. The research found that 86.5% of travelers experiencing burnout reported that losing internet access causes significant anxiety, suggesting that infrastructure reliability is as vital to the lifestyle as legal ease of entry.
