The digital payment and mobile technology landscape is seeing significant shifts. Wero, a digital wallet backed by a consortium of European banks, is set to introduce NFC contactless payment capabilities in autumn 2026. This move aims to challenge dominant American services like Apple Pay and Google Pay. As of September 2025, Wero had already reached 16 million users.

In Switzerland, the payment platform Twint is preparing to launch a new direct debit service in 2027. This service serves as an alternative to the LSV+ system, which is scheduled to be discontinued on September 30, 2028. The new Twint solution will allow users to manage recurring payment authorizations directly within the app, eliminating the need for paper forms.

Additionally, Samsung and Volkswagen have announced a partnership to integrate digital car keys into Samsung Wallet. Utilizing NFC and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies, the feature allows users to lock, unlock, and start specific Volkswagen electric vehicle models. The rollout is currently underway across 37 European countries, targeting models manufactured from April 27, 2026, equipped with ID. software 6.0.1 or higher.
