Digital payment apps drive trend of precise bill splitting

A growing social trend involves the meticulous splitting of restaurant and cafe bills down to the exact cent. This behavior, characterized by real-time calculations of individual consumption—such as distinguishing between those who ordered beer versus soft drinks—is increasingly common across generations, including Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X.

In Greece, digital payment applications like IRIS facilitate these precise transactions. Similar trends are observed in the United States and the United Kingdom, where apps like Venmo and Zelle are used during what is referred to as the ‘nickel-and-diming phase’.

Experts suggest this shift is driven by socioeconomic factors. Following successive economic crises, pandemics, and high inflation, many individuals are managing stagnant wages against a rising cost of living. This has led to a more pragmatic and less taboo approach to money, where individuals prefer to pay only for their specific consumption rather than subsidizing the more expensive choices of others.
