Digital payment security and regulatory oversight trends
The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) is focusing on developing a trustworthy digital payment ecosystem to support financial inclusion and economic modernization. Governor Ronald Gabriel emphasized that as digital transactions increase, the risks of fraud, cybercrime, and identity theft also expand. The BRH intends to establish a regulatory framework to supervise payment service providers and ensure consumer protection, noting that trust is essential for the continued adoption of these technologies.
On an international scale, the approach to payment cybersecurity is shifting from mere protection to a requirement for demonstrable risk mastery. Financial actors must now prove their security maturity through continuous assessment and independent evaluations. Because financial institutions are interdependent, a security weakness in one organization can impact the entire network, making cybersecurity a critical component of business continuity and governance.
