Digital payments on the rise in Slovakia and Slovenia
Consumer payment habits are shifting toward digital methods in Central Europe. In Slovakia, data from the National Bank shows a decline in cash usage, with ATM withdrawals dropping by 14% in June compared to the previous year. In 2024, card payments at merchants accounted for 94% of all card transactions issued by Slovak banks. While cash remains legal tender, the use of mobile wallets and contactless payments is increasing, even for small transactions.
In Slovenia, the rise of card payments has led to a trend where consumers often decline physical receipts. However, experts warn that keeping receipts is vital for verifying transaction amounts, resolving double charges, or managing returns and warranties. Additionally, travelers are advised to check receipts to ensure they are not being charged unfavorable exchange rates when terminals offer to process payments in a home currency instead of the local one.
