Digital Payments Reduce Spending Awareness, Hungarian Central Bank Report Shows

A 2025 report by the Hungarian National Bank notes that electronic payments are increasingly replacing cash in everyday transactions, making the act of spending less tangible for consumers. The silent nature of digital payments—often requiring only a tap or a vibration—can lead users to overlook small, frequent purchases that accumulate over the month.

The report cites the European Central Bank’s 2024 consumer payment survey, which found that online payments now account for 21% of all transactions in Europe, up from 7% in 2019. While digital payments are praised for speed, traceability, and security, the Hungarian National Bank warns that their convenience may encourage overspending unless users monitor their accounts more closely.
