Digital presence challenges for small businesses in Spain and Mexico
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face evolving challenges in establishing effective digital presences. In Spain, data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates a significant digital gap; while 84.5% of companies with ten or more employees have a website, only 37% of businesses with fewer than ten employees possess one.
Experts suggest that simply having a website is insufficient. The focus is shifting from mere online presence to functional utility. For some traditional businesses, such as local bars, a website may not solve primary operational issues like reservation management, which often occurs via WhatsApp or telephone.
Furthermore, businesses must optimize for more than just traditional search engines. Beyond Search Engine Optimization (SEO), there is a growing need for Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to ensure that artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT or Google's AI features, can accurately interpret a company's services and relevance to consumer queries.
