Banxico and BBVA announce changes to electronic transfers and security

Mexico is implementing significant changes to electronic banking and transfer protocols. Banxico has published new rules in the Official Gazette of the Federation to simplify mobile transfers. By December 14, 2026, financial institutions must allow users to send money using alternative identifiers or aliases instead of requiring the 18-digit CLABE or debit card numbers. This update aims to reduce data entry errors and standardize the user experience across different banks for basic transfers, DiMo, and CoDi operations.

In a separate security move, BBVA has begun notifying users that the ability to take screenshots of transfer confirmations within its banking application will soon be disabled. The bank stated this is a security measure to protect sensitive financial data, such as account and card numbers, that may appear on digital receipts. While screenshots will be restricted, BBVA noted that users can still use "share" and "copy" functions or download digital receipts to prove payments.
