Digital screen time impacts child development and adult well-being

Medical experts and academic research are examining the relationship between excessive screen time and behavioral issues in children and young adults. Pediatric neurologist Antonio Carlos de Farias notes that while ADHD is a chronic condition primarily linked to genetics, excessive use of digital devices can trigger or intensify symptoms similar to the disorder, such as inattention, irritability, impulsivity, and sleep disturbances.

Rapid digital stimuli from short videos and social media can make it difficult for children to concentrate on tasks requiring sustained attention, such as reading or studying. Unlike ADHD, which presents consistently across various environments, screen-related difficulties may subside with routine reorganization and reduced device usage.

In the context of young adults, research indicates that smartphone usage significantly impacts sleep, productivity, and psychological well-being. Studies on digital management tools suggest that apps relying solely on monitoring have limited effectiveness. Instead, tools that combine multiple strategies—such as feedback, app blocking, and gamification—tend to be more successful in promoting healthier digital habits and increasing user awareness.
