Digital screen use and its impact on eye health and sleep

Prolonged exposure to blue light from smartphones, computers, and LED screens can lead to digital eye strain, headaches, and disrupted sleep patterns. Blue light suppresses melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycles, which can interfere with natural rest.

Medical experts note that while tools like dark mode and blue light filtering glasses can provide some relief, they are only supplementary. The primary cause of eye fatigue is the cumulative load of continuous screen use, which reduces blinking frequency and accelerates tear evaporation, potentially leading to dry eye syndrome and retinal stress.

To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend the ‘20-20-20 rule’: every 20 minutes of near-distance work should be followed by looking at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Maintaining eye health also involves increasing blink frequency, using preservative-free artificial tears for dryness, and seeking professional medical examinations if symptoms like vision loss or persistent pain occur.
