Digital screen use sparks debate over child development and school policies

Debates are intensifying regarding the impact of digital activities on children, focusing on the tension between technological learning benefits and the risks of early addiction. Research conducted between 2020 and 2025 indicates that while certain digital tools can enhance logical thinking, problem-solving, and motivation, excessive screen time is linked to sleep disturbances, decreased physical activity, and reduced creativity due to the decline of free play.

In the United States, this issue has moved into the educational sphere, where parents are organizing to challenge the omnipresence of screens and educational apps in classrooms. Some parents report concerns that digital tools intended for learning are instead causing distractions or addiction. For instance, in Illinois, the collective Screen Sense Evanston has been formed to advocate for student disconnection and to push for clearer school regulations regarding technology use and the potential banning of mobile phones in schools.
