Digital screens in classrooms face reversal amid learning loss

The use of tablets and digital screens in classrooms is facing a significant reversal as educational standards decline. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many students experienced substantial learning setbacks, particularly in reading comprehension and socialization. Research indicates that many children in the “COVID-19 generation” fail to meet minimum reading speed requirements, often struggling to understand the text they read.

Beyond academic delays, the addictive nature of software and screens has been cited as a contributing factor to these issues. Consequently, several countries in Europe and various states in the United States have begun banning screen use in schools, opting instead to return to traditional paper books, notebooks, and pencils. This shift aims to address declining handwriting, spelling, and literacy skills among students.
