Digital security and identity regulation in the Netherlands

Experts and the Dutch government are addressing digital security and privacy challenges. Cybersecurity advocates suggest that digital services should be designed to make secure behavior the easiest choice for users. This approach aims to combat ‘data breach fatigue,’ a phenomenon where users lose motivation to protect their privacy due to the perceived inevitability of data theft.

In a related move toward digital regulation, the Dutch Cabinet is considering the use of a European digital ID wallet to implement age verification on social media platforms. While intended to protect children on insufficiently secure platforms, the proposal has raised significant privacy concerns. Critics warn that such systems could lead to broader user monitoring, the collection of sensitive identity documents, and the creation of digital gateways that grant authorities or companies excessive control over daily digital access.
