Digital security risks: 3D printing enables key duplication from photos
Security experts warn that posting photos of house keys on social media or online platforms can compromise physical building security. Using digital tools and 3D printing, unauthorized third parties can create functional duplicates of keys from high-quality images.
Technological advancements have made this possible for years; a 2008 University of California, San Diego research project demonstrated that software could reconstruct key profiles from low-quality images. Modern locksmiths, such as Merz Sicherheit, note that current tools and expertise allow for the replication of keys by capturing outlines, shadows, or visible engravings from digital photographs. These details can provide clues regarding specific locking systems, facilitating unauthorized access to homes without the need for physical theft of the original key.
