Digital services and internet infrastructure evolution
Digital leisure services in Germany are evolving from isolated content into interconnected ecosystems. With 89 percent of people aged 16 and older streaming video content, these platforms now integrate communication, personal data, and payment systems. This shift increases the demand for transparency regarding service providers, data processing, and costs. In regulated sectors like online gambling, providers must adhere to strict identification and player protection standards.
Technically, the internet functions as a collection of thousands of independent networks, known as Autonomous Systems. To facilitate data exchange between providers like Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and major tech firms such as Google and Amazon, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) serve as critical hubs. These hubs allow networks to connect through peering—direct data exchange—or IP transit, where a provider manages data routing to the wider internet.
