Digital slang trends highlight adolescent development and linguistic shifts

Recent internet trends involving adolescent slang, such as “farming aura,” have highlighted both the evolving digital language of younger generations and the socio-economic challenges facing youth. In Costa Rica, approximately 449,062 adolescents live in the country, with many residing in underdeveloped border regions. Data from the Ministry of Public Education and the Ministry of Culture and Youth indicate that while most adolescents study, a significant portion works, and many face urgent needs regarding mental health, substance use, and anxiety.

To bridge the communication gap between adults and the “Generation Alpha” (born between 2010 and 2025), the first Spanish-language “Dictionary for Parents” has been introduced. Jorge Álvarez, CEO of SaveFamily, notes that digital slang evolves rapidly due to memes and influencers, often serving as a way for youth to establish independence from adults. The dictionary aims to help families navigate this fast-changing linguistic landscape used across Spanish-speaking digital communities.
