Digital subscription services face consumer complaints over unauthorized renewals

Consumers in Turkey are reporting significant issues regarding the subscription economy, specifically concerning unauthorized automatic renewals and the cumulative cost of digital services.

Reports indicate that various companies, including television platforms, online education services, investment portals, and AI applications, are renewing subscriptions without explicit user consent. Some users have reported being charged for services they had previously frozen or for single-month commitments that were automatically converted into higher-priced recurring plans. In several instances, companies have reportedly refused to issue refunds, directing dissatisfied customers to file formal complaints.

The financial impact of these digital subscriptions is mounting. While individual monthly fees for services like Netflix, Spotify, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and YouTube Premium may seem small, the cumulative annual cost for multiple platforms can exceed 11,000 TL. Experts warn that low-cost introductory offers and free trials often lead to unexpected long-term expenses if not canceled promptly, contributing to a significant burden on consumer budgets.
