Digital technologies used to reconstruct historical sites in Czechia and Slovakia
Cultural heritage sites in the Czech Republic and Slovakia are utilizing 3D modeling and scanning technologies to preserve and present historical landmarks.
In Kroměříž, Czech Republic, Palacký University has developed 3D models of the Baroque grottos at the Archbishop's Castle. These models, created by the Department of Geoinformatics, provide a hypothetical reconstruction of the Apollo and Mine grottos as they likely appeared in the late 17th century. The models include details such as sparkling amethysts, lighting that mimics fire, and functional fountains, helping to visualize the spaces while they undergo restoration. The models will be available for free viewing at the Pevnost poznání science center before moving to Kroměříž next year.
In Slovakia, a cross-border project between Trenčín University Alexander Dubček and AMBIS Brno University is digitizing the St. Michael's Ossuary (Karner) located under Trenčín Castle. Using LiDAR, photogrammetry, and 360-degree video, the project aims to create a virtual tour that makes the site accessible to the public, including those with physical disabilities. This digital documentation is intended to support both tourism and future architectural reconstruction planning.
