Digital technology transforms aircraft maintenance

The commercial aviation sector is undergoing a significant technological transformation, shifting from analog methods to digital, connected systems. According to Boeing’s Pilot and Technician Outlook 2026–2045, the industry will require approximately 728,000 new maintenance technicians globally over the next 20 years to support this expansion.

Digitalization is accelerating, with the Commercial Services Market Outlook predicting that over 90% of the global fleet will be digitally connected by 2045. This evolution includes the use of artificial intelligence, smart sensors, and predictive maintenance to streamline diagnostics and repairs.

Industry veteran Raimundo Wagner Moraes Rolim, an FAA-licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic currently serving as Duty Maintenance Manager for British Airways in Atlanta, notes that while digital tools and high volumes of data improve troubleshooting, they do not replace the necessity of human judgment, technical expertise, and continuous professional training to ensure flight safety.
