Digital technology use linked to improved cognitive function
Recent scientific studies suggest that digital technology use may be linked to improved cognitive outcomes across different age groups, challenging common concerns regarding screen time.
A Finnish study published in Pediatric Exercise Science followed 260 youths for eight years. The research indicated that higher levels of screen time during childhood and adolescence were associated with better cognitive processing abilities in adolescence, specifically in areas of learning, attention, and working memory.
Separately, a meta-analysis published in Nature Human Behaviour involving over 411,000 adults aged 50 and older found that regular use of smartphones, computers, and the internet is linked to better mental functioning. Researchers from the University of Texas noted that individuals who remain comfortable with digital tools showed a lower risk of cognitive impairment and dementia compared to those who avoid them. The findings suggest the existence of a ‘technological reserve’ and found no evidence to support the ‘digital dementia hypothesis’ among seniors.
