Portugal school rankings reveal gap between private and public sectors
Recent national exam rankings in Portugal highlight a significant performance gap between private and public educational institutions. Private schools continue to dominate the top positions, with Grande Colégio Universal in Porto securing the first place. In contrast, the highest-ranking public school, Escola Artística do Conservatório de Música do Porto, appears at 38th place in the general classification.
While private institutions occupy most of the top tier, several public schools have shown notable improvements. The Escola Básica e Secundária de Anadia was recognized as the top public school in certain rankings, and the Escola Básica e Secundária Soares Basto saw a significant rise in its position. Additionally, data shows an increasing number of students completing the 3rd cycle without previous academic failures.
Educational unions, including Fenprof and FNE, have criticized the use of these rankings. They argue that such lists oversimplify complex educational realities by ignoring socioeconomic contexts, teacher shortages, and the diverse needs of students in the public sector. Critics suggest that comparing private and public schools is an unequal competition, as public institutions serve a broader and often more disadvantaged demographic.
