Digital transformation shifts focus toward sustainability and AI integration
The focus of digital transformation is shifting from initial investment and procurement to long-term sustainability and operational integration. Following the implementation of technologies driven by the PNRR, the primary challenge for the Italian healthcare sector is ensuring the continuous maintenance, updating, and management of digital infrastructures once extraordinary funding concludes.
Key priorities include the relationship between artificial intelligence and healthcare data. For AI to be effective in health services, data must be organized, accessible, and interoperable across different facilities to avoid adding complexity to stagnant organizational processes. Additionally, addressing the shortage of professional skills remains a critical bottleneck, as advanced digital tools require trained medical and nursing staff to operate them effectively.
This evolution aligns with the concept of Industry 5.0, building upon the foundations of Industry 4.0. While the previous era focused on intelligent factories, machine communication, and real-time data analysis, the current phase integrates generative and agentic AI with existing technologies like IoT, cloud computing, and advanced robotics to enhance efficiency and decision-making.
