Digital twin technology and AI advance drug discovery

The pharmaceutical industry is increasingly adopting digital twin technology and advanced computational science to enhance drug development. Digital twins serve as virtual representations of real-world systems—including molecules, biological processes, and patients—to simulate scenarios and predict outcomes. This approach aims to complement traditional physical experiments by helping researchers identify patterns and determine which experiments are most valuable, potentially reducing the time and investment required for drug discovery.

Boehringer Ingelheim is expanding its focus on AI and computational science to bridge the gap between massive real-world datasets and the simplified models needed for scientific discovery. Simultaneously, researchers at Duke University have developed an AI framework designed to convert complex, real-world motion and time-series data into concise mathematical equations. This framework can describe changes across various domains, such as biological signals, weather patterns, and mechanical devices, facilitating a deeper understanding of complex systems.
