Digital twin technology expands from manufacturing to environmental modeling
Digital twin technology is expanding from industrial applications into environmental science. In manufacturing, digital twins serve as dynamic virtual representations of physical assets, production lines, or entire factories. Unlike static CAD models, these twins utilize real-time data from IIoT sensors, scanners, and enterprise software to monitor equipment, optimize processes, and predict failures, integrating design, maintenance, and lifecycle management into a single ecosystem.
In the environmental sector, researchers are applying these models to complex natural systems like the Great Barrier Reef. By using underwater robots, divers, and cameras to create 3D reconstructions, scientists can develop living models that evolve over time. According to Dr. Renata Ferrari of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the defining feature of a digital twin is its dynamic nature, allowing researchers to track coral demographics and simulate potential future scenarios in response to climate change and marine heatwaves.
