Military technology shifts toward drones and rapid procurement

The rapid evolution of drone technology and unmanned systems is fundamentally reshaping military procurement and battlefield tactics. Traditional, slow-moving acquisition processes are being replaced by more agile models to keep pace with technological shifts.

The Pentagon has launched a specialized internet platform for counter-drone equipment, functioning similarly to an e-commerce site. This allows commanders to bypass lengthy bureaucratic procedures and order critical systems directly, significantly reducing procurement time.

In the United States, the Air Force is focusing on developing a diverse family of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These include low-cost, disposable drones designed to mimic everything from small commercial platforms to advanced stealth fighters. These target drones are intended to provide realistic radar, thermal, and radio signatures for testing defense systems without the high cost of using manned aircraft.

Experts emphasize that the success of these technologies depends on integration. Simply purchasing advanced hardware is insufficient; unmanned systems must be fully incorporated into command, control, communication, and logistics networks to provide real combat value.
