Digitalization and automation drive convenience but pose inclusion risks
The increasing integration of smart technology and automation is transforming daily life, from household appliances like smart thermostats to workplace administration. While these advancements offer convenience and energy efficiency, they raise significant questions regarding privacy and the necessity of constant technological engagement.
However, rapid digitalization presents challenges for digital inclusion. For elderly populations and individuals with disabilities, the removal of non-digital alternatives can create barriers. For instance, certain services and retail discounts now increasingly require specific smartphone applications.
Financial services are also seeing a shift, such as the transition of iDEAL to the international Wero system. Reports indicate that ING may limit scanner-based payments in favor of mobile apps, a move that could impact the approximately 2.5 million people in the Netherlands who struggle with digital payment systems. Additionally, the complexity of managing numerous passwords and digital identities remains a growing burden for many users.
