Dil Chahta Hai celebrates 25 years and launches new filmmaker initiative

The landmark Bollywood film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Released in 2001, the coming-of-age comedy-drama, directed by Farhan Akhtar, is credited with redefining contemporary Hindi cinema through its naturalistic dialogue, modern visual language, and focus on urban friendship rather than traditional melodrama.

To mark the silver jubilee, Farhan Akhtar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani announced the launch of ‘Excel Origins’. This new initiative under Excel Entertainment aims to support the next generation of storytellers by providing platforms, resources, and creative freedom to filmmakers under the age of 30 who possess distinctive voices and original ideas.

Cast members and crew have reflected on the film’s enduring legacy. Actor Ayub Khan noted the film’s unique storytelling formula remains a benchmark, while director Farhan Akhtar expressed gratitude to the audience for keeping the film relevant. The production, which featured stars such as Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, was noted for its professionalized approach and use of sync sound.
