Mint cultivation offers high returns for Turkish farmers
Mint cultivation is emerging as a highly profitable alternative for Turkish farmers due to high demand in the European market. The crop is increasingly sought after by the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food, and spice industries.
Producing mint requires relatively low initial capital and does not necessitate heavy mechanization, making it suitable for small-scale family businesses. In Turkey’s favorable climate, particularly in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Southeastern Anatolia regions, producers can achieve three to four harvests per season.
Organic production offers a significant economic advantage, with organic mint fetching up to 30% higher prices in export markets. Additionally, value can be increased by selling dried products or essential oils through distillation. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and TKDK provide various grants and support programs for those looking to invest in irrigation, drying, or processing facilities.
