Dilan Yesilgöz seeks to remain VVD leader despite internal party criticism

Dilan Yesilgöz, leader of the Dutch People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), has expressed her intention to remain the party's lead candidate in the upcoming elections. This announcement follows a period of internal tension and criticism from party members regarding the party's current direction and recent polling results.

During a meeting in Veghel with approximately 150 critical members, Yesilgöz addressed concerns about the party potentially adopting a left-leaning agenda. She denied these claims, asserting that while she is open to cooperation with the Pro party on specific issues like nitrogen plans, such collaboration must also include the right-wing party JA21. She stated, “We want to work with Pro, but not without the right.”

The internal unrest has been fueled by recent policy shifts under the Jetten cabinet and changes regarding wealth taxation. Yesilgöz characterized the internal debate as a normal part of political life. The VVD is scheduled to hold a congress in late November to present a further action plan and address member concerns.
