Dimapur Durga Puja celebrations see subdued business and new guidelines

Durga Puja celebrations in Dimapur have seen a decline in commercial activity and grandeur compared to previous years. Local traders and clothing retailers report sluggish business and lower customer turnout at markets and shopping malls, though Puja Committees remain hopeful for increased participation in the remaining days of the festival.

To manage the festivities, the Hindu Seva Samiti has issued guidelines to Puja Committees to ensure safe, disciplined, and environmentally friendly celebrations. These directives include adhering to environmental regulations by using biodegradable materials and straw-structured idols instead of Plaster of Paris or chemical colors. The Samiti also advised committees to protect the Dhansiri River from non-biodegradable waste.

Regarding public order, guidelines discourage the use of loudspeakers near hospitals and nursing homes, requiring audio playback to cease by 10 pm. Security measures have been established by the district administration and police, with committees instructed to remain vigilant regarding suspicious objects and ensure that stalls do not obstruct pedestrian movement.
