Dimitar Kovaçevski defends French EU accession proposal

Former Prime Minister and deputy Dimitar Kovaçevski has defended the decision to accept the French proposal and the Negotiating Framework for European Union accession. He stated that, to date, no better proposal has been presented to North Macedonia.

Kovaçevski noted that both the previous opposition and the current government sought a mandate to negotiate a new framework that provides guarantees for the Macedonian minority in Bulgaria. He emphasized that the ultimate goal for the country must be EU membership, citing the improved living standards in member states as a primary motivator.

Furthermore, Kovaçevski stressed the importance of maintaining good neighborly relations, comparing the necessity of cooperation between North Macedonia and countries like Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania to the historical necessity of cooperation between France and Germany for the existence of the EU.
