Bank of Greece appoints Dimitrios Chomokos as Deputy Governor

Dimitrios Chomokos has been appointed as the new Deputy Governor of the Bank of Greece for a six-year term starting September 21, 2026. An academic at Oxford University's Saïd Business School and a former economist at the Bank of England, Chomokos will participate in shaping financial stability and risk analysis strategies. His appointment follows recommendations from the General Council and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.

In separate financial news, Moody’s has upgraded the outlook for the National Bank of Greece's long-term deposit liabilities from stable to positive, while maintaining its Baa1 rating. The agency also improved the outlook for senior unsecured debt to stable. This follows a recent upgrade in the Greek sovereign outlook, reflecting the bank's strong profitability, capital adequacy, and liquidity profile.

Additionally, the National Bank of Greece announced it acquired 593,171 treasury shares at an average price of €17.47, totaling approximately €10.37 million, as part of its share buyback program.

Regarding the energy crisis, European Commissioner for Sustainable and Digital Transport Apostolos Tzitzikostas warned of significant risks to the global economy. He emphasized the need for urgent measures to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and promote sustainable transport, including high-speed rail and electric mobility, noting that he may request an emergency EU Council meeting if the transport sector situation worsens.
