Dimitris Avramopoulos: Belgian arrest warrant revoked in Qatargate case

Belgian authorities have revoked the arrest warrant issued against Dimitris Avramopoulos, a former European Commissioner and current Greek Member of Parliament, in connection with the ‘Qatargate’ investigation.

Avramopoulos appeared voluntarily before Belgian judicial authorities in Brussels to provide explanations and evidence to demonstrate he had no involvement in illegal activities. Following his testimony, the warrant was withdrawn, leading Greek judicial authorities to close the case file.

The investigation had previously focused on his role within the honorary council of the organization Fight Impunity. Avramopoulos has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that his position was ‘exclusively honorary and advisory’ without executive, administrative, or financial responsibilities. He also noted that his involvement followed all necessary European Commission procedures for former commissioners and that his compensation was fully declared and taxed in Greece.
