Dimitris Avramopoulos requests lifting of parliamentary immunity

Dimitris Avramopoulos, a Greek Member of Parliament and former European Commissioner, has formally requested the lifting of his parliamentary immunity. This request follows an arrest warrant issued by Belgian judicial authorities as part of the ongoing Qatargate investigation.

In a memorandum submitted to the Greek Parliament, Avramopoulos denies any involvement in illegal activities or acting on behalf of any foreign state. He emphasizes that his participation in the NGO Fight Impunity was strictly honorary and advisory, asserting that he held no executive, administrative, or financial authority within the organization. He further stated that his compensation was fully declared and taxed in Greece.

Regarding the Qatargate allegations, Avramopoulos clarified that the European initiative to waive visa requirements for Qatari citizens was proposed in 2022, approximately three years after his term as EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship concluded. The Greek Parliament's Ethics Committee has already issued a unanimous recommendation to lift his immunity, paving the way for the judicial process to proceed.
