Dimitris Kalogeropoulos clarifies remarks on Turkey-Libya memorandum

New Democracy MP Dimitris Kalogeropoulos has issued a corrective statement following controversial remarks made during a television interview on MEGA News. While discussing the maritime boundary agreement between Turkey and Libya, Kalogeropoulos used the colloquial expression “ton ipame” (we drank it), which drew significant backlash.

In a subsequent social media post, the MP characterized the phrasing as “unfortunate” and stated that it does not reflect the national position or his personal views regarding Greece’s diplomatic and geostrategic advantages. He emphasized that the Turkey-Libya memorandum is illegal, contrary to international law, and does not produce valid results against Greek sovereign rights.

Kalogeropoulos defended the government’s strategy, citing the strengthening of the Greek Armed Forces and the maritime zone agreement with Egypt as factors that effectively override the memorandum.

Political opponents have reacted to the incident. Dimitris Koutsoumpas, General Secretary of the KKE, criticized the government’s handling of Greek-Turkish relations, while Kostas Tsoukalas of PASOK called for increased EU sanctions against Turkey and Libya.
