Dimitris Kirmikiloglou unveils Greek media reform strategy

Dimitris Kirmikiloglou, the General Secretary of Communication and Information, presented a new strategic framework for the Greek media landscape at the Olympia Forum. The strategy focuses on building information ecosystems through new media regulations, stable state support for the press, enhanced media education, and investment in new technologies.

Addressing the challenge of low public trust, Elias Nikolaidis of diaNEOsis noted that only approximately one in ten citizens expresses trust in media outlets in Greece, with the country ranking low in international trust indices. Kirmikiloglou highlighted a shift in information consumption, noting that citizens increasingly rely on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok as primary news sources.

The government's plan includes implementing a new legislative framework for the licensing of regional television stations through the Hellenic National Council for Radio and Television (ESR). The goal is to establish transparent and equal rules that ensure the availability of journalistic content and necessary infrastructure, while also integrating European regulatory frameworks and supporting regional radio stations.
